Best Math Apps Available on Android and iOS for Kids

During the summer there is a tendency for children to lose some of the education they have gained throughout the school year. In order to combat this “summer slide,” there are plenty of educational apps that can also be fun.

I am also a bit of a user interface snob. If the game or app doesn’t look amazing, I won’t download it, and I won’t use it. When finding new games and apps for my kids, I apply the same quality standards and do not allow my children to play inferior games. Here are my favorite apps that can teach kids Math skills, and the good news is each of them is available on both Android and iOS.

Dragonbox – The first Dragonbox game released was Dragonbox Algebra. My kids have loved this game, and has really taught them a lot about how Algebra works, without them really knowing that they are learning Algebra! When the game starts out, you start to clear the board by matching things on each side of a line. The graphics are amazing, and it helps your kid learn concepts that might be difficult.

Since Dragonbox Algebra came out, they have released several other Math and Science related games that have the same level of design quality and fun. I honestly would download every single game they have. They are all winners.

PBS KIDS Measure Up! – When PBS puts their name behind something, it generally turns out pretty great, and this measuring skills apps is no different. It features favorite characters from their hit shows and reports progress to the PBS parental app called PBS KIDS Super Vision. There are 19 unique games within the app and several videos to enjoy as well.

Fruit Ninja Math Master – While the regular Fruit Ninja game is more of a hack and slash type game where you need quick hand-eye coordination to advance, the Math Master game from the same company teaches addition and subtraction, multiplication, number sequences, shapes and even fractions. The graphics are fun and entertaining and helps keep kids engaged in learning math skills.

Pet Bingo – Duck Duck Moose is another game creator that has a ton of well made educational apps in their portfolio. Pet Bingo is one of their best apps for Math skills. The game allows you to choose which type of skill you want to work on (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division). As you play the games you can earn pets, feed them, and take care of them to see how they grow as your child’s skills grow.

Peter Pig’s Money Counter – Created by Visa, this game helps teach kids US currency. Kids can practice identifying, counting and saving money while learning fun facts about currency itself. After completing the game, players are rewarded with a trip to the virtual store to buy accessories within budget and dress up Peter Pig in fun scenes.

Crazy Times Tables (Android, iOS) – I have a confession to make. I don’t know my times tables very well. I am very close to just downloading this game to help me learn them myself. This app is specifically to help children memorize basic multiplication answers. It is fun and can be personalized for your child, which makes it a great interactive way to memorize times tables.

If your child is a little bit older, they may not need the cute whimsical games these apps will provide. A couple of good apps to keep up skills for older kids are IXL and Khan Academy. Help your kids understand how Math can be fun, and they will be well on their way to success in school next year!
