Summer Road Trip Apps Your Kids Will Love

road trip apps

Going on a road trip is almost a right of passage as a kid growing up. Especially in large families when buying multiple plane tickets can get too expensive. Road trips can be extremely boring, and there can be long stretches of road with zero internet signal for your devices.

The old school road trips games can still bring a lot of entertainment, but adding a touch of technology can make it just a little bit easier to play. There are a few apps out there that take the road trip games to the next level, and most don’t even require an internet connection to play.

Our Top 5 Road Trip Apps:

License Plate Game – I think we have all played the license plate game at some point in our lives. It’s a classic on a road trip! The object is to check out each passing car, and try to find license plates for all 50 states if you are in the US! You can play as a whole family, and just keep track on one phone, or individually and whoever sees the plate first gets to count it! (AndroidiOS)

Bingo – Much like the license plate game, road trip bingo will ask you to find items outside of your car windows. This will have animals, street signs, types of cars, etc. If you don’t shout BINGO, it doesn’t count, so make sure you are keeping track! (AndroidiOS)

MadLibs – Kids LOVE to make up silly stories, and no one helps them do that better than the official MadLibs books. They now have an official app too. There are a ton of different stories to choose from, and you won’t have to keep erasing the page to use the same story over and over again. (AndroidiOS)

HeadsUp! – This game from Ellen DeGeneres can be difficult to play when you are in different rows of the car, but a little maneuvering in your seat and it should work out. To play, you load the game up on your phone and then put it on your head while it changes the words that you need to guess. The person who can see the item on your head has to give you clues so you can guess what it is. This would be fun to play by breaking your family into teams (perhaps one team member per row in the car? (AndroidiOS)

General Travel Games – Having a hard time remembering games you used to play as a kid? Want to find some new travel games to play? These apps can help you by explaining various games and letting you keep the score within the app. From I Spy to Who Am I and more, you will definitely not run out of things to do with this one. (AndroidiOS)

Bringing the whole family together to play games can make the trip go much more quickly than if everyone is glued to their own devices. Road trips should be a fun family adventure, even if a few fights end up breaking out, that’s almost the whole point, right?
